The urge to create
How many times have you wanted to take the time and create art but didn’t? Making art just for you, with no other intention than to enjoy the process? How many times have you answered this inner call, the call to create, savouring the expression, the feeling, delight. Sadly for many the call is missed.
The urge to create, we all have it, we just don’t always heed this urge. In fact most times we ignore it or worse suppress it. We treat these creative urges as trivial. Our task oriented society dictates that art that is not productive, that is not sellable is frivolous. We fall victim to this way of thinking and continue to feel unsatisfied as we fail to give in to these creative urges.
Perhaps once in a while we placate the creative urge with a doodle, quick drawing or photograph, but we only allow it when the extra time presents itself or in between “more important things”. Giving our creativity the space and the time that it so deserves rarely happens. Instead we cling to these notions that satisfying our creative urges are not important or worse yet we listen to the scripts we’ve picked up along the way that convince us to believe the lie that we are not creative, and that we are foolish to think otherwise.
How has it gotten to this? Where we are so far removed from our creativity that we look for excuses not to create? I have to finish this more important thing first, I can’t create amongst all this so must straighten it out first, I need to get better supplies, take just one more art class, have my space just right, need this or that before I can settle down and create. I have to know what I am going to create, know how, know why. The excuses continue to pile in burying any kindling of creative spirit that is waiting to be sparked.
These are patterns that need to be broken before our creative fire goes out. A simple art date, scheduled regularly, creating in community, putting yourself and art expressions out there for others to witness, can all help revive ones’ creative drive. It’s not always easy, but it is always satisfying to connect deeply with your creativity. One thing is for sure that action needs to be taken if your creative fire is to stay lit.
