In support of my Visual Journal Journey workshop series I have been running in Toronto with groups  since 2014, I am now offering the same guidance and holding of space in a monthly format.  Previously I only offered these workshops to alumni of the Visual Journal Journey Workshop series, however, I realize that it is difficult for many to commit to 4 weeks in a row.
As an art therapist who has worked in the field of art therapy since 1995, I know the importance of having a creative outlet.  Though my workshops are not art therapy, I have designed them to give you the tools to begin to explore and tap into your inner wisdom and creativity.
Each Art Journaling Monthly workshop offers new ways of approaching your art journaling.  As an art therapist with over 20 years of experience helping others through art making, I have crafted art directives to help you get started and move you beyond the blank journal page.

Though these workshops are not art therapy, they offer an opportunity for you to experience connection with your inner wisdom through art-making.

What is art Journaling?

Art journaling is a form of self-expression using paint and mixed media (collage, drawing materials etc.) in a personal visual journal.  You’ve likely heard of the expression “a picture is worth a thousand words”, which speaks to how much depth visual imagery can hold. Rather than using words only, art journaling invites you to express yourself through imagery, colour, and form, tapping into your intuition for answers or simply using the art journal as a vessel for play, and relaxation.
When you express yourself through the process of art making, you forge a connection with your inner wisdom and creativity, allowing for the unfolding of self-care. I understand how important it is to spend some time reflecting on our art journaling so I offer reflective questions during the workshop to help you delve deeper into personal meaning in the privacy of your art journal.

The Benefits of Art Journaling

    • Art journaling is a creative practice that once you have begun is quite sustainable.

  •

    • You can work in your art journal for short periods of time daily, or weekly.

  •

    • You can work on the same piece over time, or do short and quick entries that reflect where you are at in that moment in time.

  •

    • Art journaling can help you connect with how you are feeling and help you find the answers from within.

  •

    • Art journaling offers an outlet for stress, and a way to process your day.

  •

    • Art journaling can help you develop a mindfulness practice, as well as develop self-compassion and acceptance.

  •

    • Art journaling can help you reflect on your strengths and nurture an attitude of gratitude.

  •

    • Art journaling can be fun to do, there are no wrong ways to art journal, only many ways.

  •

    • No artistic skill is necessary as art journaling for health and well-being is about the process.

In these monthly workshops you will be introduced to different ways of working in your art journal for self-expression and self-care.  We will focus on unique themes each time, though each workshop will stand on its own.  This is a space place for creative experimentation, play and self-acceptance through art making.  You will be developing your creative muscles so that you may call on these skills to support your mental health and well-being.

Please Note: Art journal not included, all other supplies will be available for use during the workshop.

YES! I’m ready to engage in self-care through art journaling!

FAQ

  1. Do I need to know how to draw to do art journaling?

No, art journaling is for everyone, no matter what your perceived skill level, we are all creative beings.  First and foremost, art journaling is about letting go of preconceptions of what is “art” and  how the art journal page will turn out.  Play, process and experimentation, is the overarching premise that guides these workshops.

  1. What if I make a mistake or it does not turn out?

I always say that so called “mistakes” are opportunities for new paths and discoveries.  Mistakes are an important part of growth.  I like to call “mistakes” in art making happy accidents, because they can lead us where we need to go but did not know!

  1. Will I be asked to share my art journal with others in the workshop?

No, your art journal is your own personal space to express yourself.  While others may see parts of what you make just by being in the same space, the beauty of art making is that only you really know what it is about.  As this is a workshop, and not art therapy, I do not ask participants to share what they have made visually (holding up to show) or with words.  Who you choose to share parts of your art journal with is up to you.   Because art journaling can be highly emotional at times and of a very personal nature, I recommend that before sharing parts of your art journal with anyone, you give yourself a few days sitting with what you created in order to make an informed decision.

  1. Will I need to buy expensive art supplies to keep art journaling?

Absolutely not!  Many supplies I use for art journaling can be found at the dollar store or inexpensively.

  1. What is included in the workshop fee?

Live support during the workshop, a materials list, reflective prompts for inner inquiry and growth, a recording available for 4 weeks after the workshop.
