Inner Journey through Painting
Painting is a conduit for many things. It challenges our self-doubt, inner critics, and perception of Self. Through the journey of painting we can come to know our inner lives differently. We can have our way of being in the world reflected back at us through the process. How do we approach the canvas or paper? Are we hesitant? Eager? Anxious? Disconnected? Focused on outcome? Emotional? Afraid of failing? These different stances can give us a clue to how we deal with unfamiliar situations, stressful situations, outer or inner imposed expectations.
Whenever I run my Painting With Your Muse workshop these questions come up in some form or another. The painting process confronts participants with these dilemmas and inner struggles of expectation. When they are able to let go of their expectations, ironically that is when they enjoy the process and their painting the most. Permission to do this is not always easy to give and take. We have been programmed to look outside of ourselves for approval and recognition. When we are able to step outside of these parameters that connection to Self is strengthened.
Intuitive painting allows for this expansion of our inner world to be acknowledged and recognized for its importance in our life. It brings us back to our inner wisdom that so many of us are disconnected from. Much of yesterday’s Painting With Your Muse workshop conversations centred around an experienced angst of outer expectation versus inner needs. Once this was acknowledged an opening up to process was able to ensue, bringing freedom of expression, insights and acceptance of what is. The painting process brought each Muse back to an equilibrium of sorts. Each Muse had a different reason to be there: for some it was to reconnect with dormant creativity, for others it was to discover unacknowledged creativity. Regardless, in letting go to the intuitive painting process each unlocked the door behind which their Muse was hidden.
Have you connected with your inner Muse lately? She/he is always there waiting for the opportunity to join you. In what way will you engage your Muse, and unlock your creative wisdom? Give your Self permission today!
