Dreams Awake
When I was a child I use to have a reoccurring dream that I was flying. Sometimes it was blissful, soaring high in the sky. How powerful and untouchable I
felt.
Sometimes I would flounder, dipping low to the ground where my pursuers tried to reach me. I would fearfully flee barely escaping their grasp.
Always I was elated. Memorized by my abilities. I remember having these dreams often. It’s funny how their remnants have stayed with me all these years despite my not recording them.
It’s funny how their essence can be recalled more easily than some of my childhood memories. To me that speaks to the power of dreams. Their importance and the significance they play in our lives. Processing the intermingling of our inner and outer lives. Conjuring up visions of the endless possibilities with which we can transform our lives if only we tap into our inner wisdom.
I see dreaming is a way to do this. Dreaming can reveal to us our underlying motivations and blocks. They can bring us to a place of resolution. But only if we are willing to look. Then we will see what wisdom lies within.
When I was a child I must have known intrinsically what I needed. Those reoccurring dreams of flight empowered me but also evoked the need to face my fears. At the time I did not consciously know the power of my dreams and so I did not explore them further in my waking life. My dreams knew better though and tried to show me, guide me, wake me to their potential by repeatedly visiting me.
They got their wish some 10 years later, when I was in my twenties I was studying to be an art therapist and went to see a Jungian therapist who revived in me the power of dreams. I began to give my dreams the space to be heard. The respect that they deserved. I began to understand my own dream language as they spoke to me every night through their magical imagery.
Sometimes they were not so easy to see. Usually this was because my eyes were not open, nor ready to see them for who they really were. But the beauty of dreams is that once you are ready to receive them with eyes open, they keep speaking to you until you get the message.
