Each Art Journaling Monthly workshop offers new ways of approaching your art journaling.  As an art therapist with over 20 years of experience helping others through art making, I have crafted art directives to help you get started and move you beyond the blank journal page.
After running my in person Visual Journal Journey workshop series and alumni drop-ins here in Toronto with groups of women since 2014, I am now offering the same guidance and holding of space for my online community.  I have been honored to have a number of women travel from a far to join me in person for my workshops and realize that is not possible for everyone.  As an art therapist who has worked in the field of art therapy since 1995, I know the importance of having a creative outlet.  Though in my workshops we are not doing art therapy, I have designed them to give you the tools to begin to explore and tap into your inner wisdom and creativity.

Though these workshops are not art therapy, they offer an opportunity for you to experience connection with your inner wisdom through art-making.

What is Art Journaling?

Art journaling is a form of self-expression using paint and mixed media (collage, drawing materials etc.) in a personal visual journal.  You’ve likely heard of the expression “a picture is worth a thousand words”, which speaks to how much depth visual imagery can hold. Rather than using words only, art journaling invites you to express yourself through imagery, colour, and form, tapping into your intuition for answers or simply using the art journal as a vessel for play, and relaxation.  When you express yourself through the process of art making, you forge a connection with your inner wisdom and creativity, allowing for the unfolding of self-care. I understand how important it is to spend some time reflecting on our art journaling so I offer reflective questions during the workshop to help you delve deeper into personal meaning in the privacy of your art journal.

The Benefits of Art Journaling

    • Art journaling is a creative practice that once you have begun is quite sustainable.

    • You can work in your art journal for short periods of time daily, or weekly.

    • You can work on the same piece over time, or do short and quick entries that reflect where you are at in that moment in time.

    • Art journaling can help you connect with how you are feeling and help you find the answers from within.

    • Art journaling offers an outlet for stress, and a way to process your day.

    • Art journaling can help you develop a mindfulness practice, as well as develop self-compassion and acceptance.

    • Art journaling can help you reflect on your strengths and nurture an attitude of gratitude.

    • Art journaling is fun to do, there are no wrong ways to art journal, only many ways.

    • No artistic skill is necessary as art journaling for health and well-being is about the process.

In these monthly workshops you will be introduced to different ways of working in your art journal for self-expression and self-care.  We will focus on unique themes each time, though each workshop will stand on its own.  This is a space place for creative experimentation, play and self-acceptance through art making.  You will be developing your creative muscles so that you may call on these skills to support your mental health and well-being.
